Cancer Drug Design and Discovery

cancer

Cancer Drug Design and Discovery imate source of information on the design of new anticancer agents, emphasising small molecules, this newest work covers recent notable successes resulting from the human genome and cancer genomics projects. These advances have provided information on targets involved in specific cancers that are leading to effective medicines for at least some of the common solid tumours. Unique sections explain the basic underlying principles of cancer drug development and provide a practical introduction to modern methods of drug design. Appealing to a broad audience, this is an excellent reference for translational researchers interested in cancer biology and medicine as well as students in pharmacy, pharmacology, or medicinal and biological chemistry, and clinicians taking oncology options. * Covers both currently available drugs as well as those under development * Provides a clinical perspective on trials of new anticancer agents * Presents drug discovery examples through the use of case histories.

TNF-alpha Inhibitors كتاب

TNF-alpha Inhibitors

book

TNF-alpha Inhibitors (Milestones in Drug Therapy) By Jeffrey M. Weinberg, Robin Buchholz
Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel | 30-06-2006 | ISBN: 3764372486 | 133 pages | 768 Kb

Over the last decade, the advent of biologic agents has greatly revolutionized therapeutic medicine in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and psoriasis. Elucidation of the complex web of cytokine network and the roles of these cytokines in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders provided one of the key catalysts for the advancement of targeted biologic therapy in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Towards Drugs of the Future

future

edition 2009 | PDF | 130 pages | 2.88 mb

The scope of this book is that the pharmaceutical industry must change the way it operates. The editors of this book feel that the current business model is economically unsustainable and incapable to meet expectations of modern society. The number of novel medications in the global industry pipeline is insufficient to suffice demand of the markets, the financial performance of several companies is declining, sales and marketing costs are rising, regulatory constraints are increasingly challenging and overall reputation of industry is tarnishing. Unmet medical needs must be better addressed and tangible benefits need to be exposed in order to be rewarded by healthcare payers. In addition, the focus is shifting from simple treatment of the ill to preventative measures and health management. This volume addresses newest development in synthetic and medicinal chemistry with the emphasis on global challenges. One of the goals is to ensure that new chemistry develops novel technologies in which system biology approach or target approach is computer simulated, testing is performed in silico on rat or human digital models and synthesis of molecules is restricted to intelligent synthesis of treatments based on simulations. Implementation of such new technologies requires the pharmaceutical industry to rethink and adopt the current business model in order to contribute value to the healthcare systems of the future.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Implications for the 21st Century كتاب

21

408 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB

Antimicrobial resistance can develop in any type of microbe (germ). Microbes can develop resistance to specific medicines. A common misconception is that a persons body becomes resistant to specific drugs. However, it is microbes, not people that become resistant to the drugs. Drug resistance happens when microbes develop ways to survive the use of medicines meant to kill or weaken them. If a microbe is resistant to many drugs, treating the infections it causes can become difficult or even impossible. Someone with an infection that is resistant to a certain medicine can pass that resistant infection to another person. In this way, a hard-to-treat illness can be spread from person to person. In some cases, the illness can lead to serious disability or even death.

This comprehensive, up-to-date volume aims to define issues and potential solutions to the challenges of antimicrobial resistance. The chapter authors are leading international experts on antimicrobial resistance among a variety of bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, enteroccoci, staphylococci, gram-negative bacilli, mycobacteria species) viruses (HIV, herpesviruses), parasites (malaria, leishmaniasis) and fungi (Candida species, fusarium etc.). The chapters will explore the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance, the immunology and epidemiology of resistance strains, clinical implications and implications on research and lack thereof, and prevention and future directions. This volume will also describe the steps that researchers are taking to develop molecular methods for detecting resistance; develop drugs and other means to deal with newly-resistant organisms. A special chapter to address the issues on strategies to limit antimicrobial resistance propagation will be included in this volume.

Toward a 21st Century Health System is a collection of thoughtful analyses that explore a key element of the health care delivery system¾physician group practices. Edited by policy experts Alain Enthoven and Laura Tollen, and written by a blue ribbon panel of health policy scholars and leaders including Stephen Shortell, Hal Luft, Donald Berwick, James Robinson, and Helen Darling, this resource addresses a variety of topics, includingÂ
• Organized delivery systems
• Quality of care in prepaid group practice versus other types of managed care
• The role of physician leadership and culture in group practice
• Prepaid group practice and the formation of national health policy
This comprehensive resource also covers such topics as pharmacy benefit management, technology assessment, health services research, and employer purchasing of benefits– all as they relate to prepaid group practice.

TThe impact society has on the progress and acceptance of new science – and vice versa – is greater than most people think. For instance, over the past five years, events indicate that citizens’ views have helped change the focus of the research and development carried out by both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and by the Environmental Protection Agency. Likewise, citizen actions have influenced the direction of the activities of organizations such as the World Bank in their efforts to improve agriculture and living conditions in the developing nations of the world. The new “Science and Society” set not only highlights the “what” of science, but also the “why,” the “how,” and the “who.” Each volume provides an accessible, authoritative view of the history and current state of a particular issue. With a focus on humanizing science, this set brings each subject – from air pollution to nuclear power to natural medicines – to life by showing students all the factors that motivate research and revealing how scientists compete and collaborate with one another. By exploring the connections between science and society, especially in controversial areas, each book illustrates both how society supports science and how science in return supports society. Each volume includes an introduction providing an overview of the topic, complete chapter-by-chapter coverage, dozens of black-and-white photographs and line illustrations, a helpful index and glossary, lists of websites and suggestions for further reading that allow readers quick access to detailed information.
